BetterStage Treats Your Mac Desk as a Project Workspace

A coding session can leave an editor, terminal, browser, documentation, chat, and test output spread across two or three displays. Then a support request arrives. You move windows around, lose the previous arrangement, and repeat the process when it is time to return to the code.
macOS already has ways to organise windows and desktops, but the problem for multi-monitor users is often not opening an app. It is restoring a complete working context. BetterStage approaches that problem by treating a project or activity as a named Stage. A Stage contains the apps, windows, and layout across the displays involved. Switching Stages changes the whole desk rather than only bringing one application forward.
Stages are the main idea
The useful distinction is between an application switcher and a workspace manager. BetterStage is built around the latter. You might have one Stage for development, another for research, and another for writing or communications. Each can remember which windows belong to it and how they are arranged.
Its multi-monitor workspaces are intended to move together. A Stage can span every participating display, so changing from a project to another mode of work does not require rebuilding each monitor separately. There is a visual Stages Bar, menu bar controls, and keyboard shortcuts for switching Stages or sending a window to one. The exact interaction is configurable. It can expose window snapping, Stage changes, and layout actions without requiring a trip to the menu bar.
This makes the product most relevant to people whose work is organised by context rather than by a single list of recently used apps. A solo developer moving between code and customer support has a clearer use case than someone who only wants to place two windows side by side.
Two layout modes for each display
BetterStage does not force every screen into the same kind of arrangement. Each display in a Stage can use Enhanced Native mode or TabStack mode.
Enhanced Native is the free-placement option. It adds snapping and shortcuts while leaving windows as ordinary floating windows. This suits a monitor that you prefer to arrange manually, or a screen where fixed panes would get in the way.
TabStack is the more structured option. It tiles windows into resizable panes and can place additional windows into tabs within those panes. The landing page shows this being used for combinations such as an editor and terminal, or a terminal with logs and tests. Windows can be split, joined, swapped, and retiled within the layout.
That split is important. BetterStage is not simply a tiling tool applied to every display. It lets a Stage combine free placement on one monitor with panes and tabs on another. TabStack is part of the paid upgrade, while the free plan includes Enhanced Native mode and a limited number of named Stages.
Continuity is the practical feature
The strongest part of the proposition is not any single snapping shortcut. It is the attempt to preserve the workspace after something disrupts it. Workspace Continuity keeps local checkpoints and is intended to restore Stages after BetterStage restarts, the Mac wakes, or a display is reconnected.
The paid upgrade adds Saved Workspaces. These are named arrangements that can be loaded with custom shortcuts. The product also describes a Clean Load option that quits apps and removes Stages outside the saved setup. If a monitor is missing, a saved workspace can be loaded onto another display or merged with the current layout.
This is useful for a desk that changes shape. A laptop might be used alone one day and connected to several displays the next. It also introduces a manual decision point: recovery can offer a choice between restoring the previous arrangement and keeping the current layout. That is safer than silently rearranging a desk, but it means the user still needs to understand which state they are accepting.
Optional AI, with clear boundaries
AI Staging is not the foundation of BetterStage. It is an optional way to describe a layout in plain English. A user can write a Recipe, identify apps and displays, inspect the proposed arrangement, and approve or undo it before windows move.
The important privacy detail is that this feature is invoked rather than continuously watching the desktop. The developer says it sends disclosed workspace metadata to the selected provider and does not send screenshots. Users can supply their own API key, use a local model, or use the managed service. That still requires care: choosing an external provider means accepting whatever data handling follows from that choice, even if screenshots are excluded.
Who should use BetterStage?
BetterStage is aimed at Mac developers, solo founders, and researchers who regularly switch between distinct work contexts across multiple displays. The free plan is a reasonable way to test whether named Stages and continuity solve the recurring problem of reconstructing a desk. The limitations are straightforward. It runs only on macOS 14 or later, on either Apple Silicon or Intel Macs, so it is not a cross-platform workspace manager. It also needs Accessibility permission for window management. Users who want a simple two-window snap tool, work on one display, or dislike maintaining named layouts may find the Stage model heavier than the problem they have.
