A reference list can look convincing while containing a wrong year, a malformed DOI, or a paper that was never published. That is especially easy to miss when the entry was produced by an AI tool. The prose may be polished, the journal may exist, and the volume number may look plausible. A visual check is not enough.

What CiteFetch checks
The checker accepts a bibliography pasted one reference per line, as well as individual sources supplied through a DOI, ISBN, URL, title or PDF. It looks for identifiers first. Journal articles and conference papers are checked against CrossRef and OpenAlex, while books can be matched through OpenLibrary and Google Books. If a reference has no identifier, CiteFetch searches by title and compares the closest record with the text supplied.
That distinction matters. The tool is not merely asking whether a string resembles a citation. It is attempting to find a bibliographic record and compare its details with the reference in front of it. The developer says pasted reference lists are processed and discarded rather than stored, which may make the workflow more suitable for unpublished or embargoed material. That remains a product claim, so users handling sensitive research should still consider their own policies before pasting it into any web service.
The useful part is the verdict
CiteFetch returns four kinds of result. A verified reference has a matching identifier and compatible author, year and title information. A metadata mismatch means the work appears to exist, but details such as the year, volume, issue or author list differ from the submitted version. That is the category for many ordinary transcription errors.
The other two outcomes are more cautious. Cannot confirm means no matching record was found in the sources checked. It does not mean the work is fake. Book chapters, dissertations, government reports, conference abstracts and much non-English scholarship may be absent from open bibliographic databases. Likely does not exist is stronger: the search found nothing resembling the reference, or an identifier resolved to a different work.
CiteFetch also shows the fields that disagree, placing the submitted value beside the database value. That gives the result practical use beyond a simple pass or fail. If the title and authors match but the year is wrong, you have a concrete correction to make. If a source cannot be confirmed, you know to check a library catalogue, publisher page or the original document manually.
This is a better model for a reference checker than treating every missing result as a fabrication. A database lookup can establish that a record was found. It cannot establish that a source is illegitimate merely because the database has no entry for it.
A second tool for building citations
The generator works in the opposite direction. Where it fits, and where it does not
CiteFetch makes most sense shortly before handing in an essay, literature review or article, particularly when some references came from an AI assistant or were entered manually. It can find the polished-looking source that does not exist and expose a real paper whose details have drifted. Students, researchers, educators and writers are the obvious audience described by the developer.
Its limitation is also clear. CiteFetch depends on the coverage and accuracy of the databases it searches. A cannot confirm result is an unresolved task, not proof that the source is fabricated. The tool is therefore not a replacement for reading the original paper or checking unusual sources through a library or publisher. It is also web-only, so it is a poor fit for someone who needs a local desktop workflow or cannot send reference data to an online service.
