Free Model

Free Model puts free AI models behind one API

It pairs browser chat with a shared API, but you need your own OpenRouter key.

Trying a language model for a small script can turn into a setup chore: find an endpoint, sort out credentials, then repeat the work when you want to test a different model. Free Model is aimed at removing some of that friction. It gathers models offered at no cost, lets you chat with them in a browser, and presents one API for calling them from code.

The important qualification is that it is a gateway, not a provider of its own models. Its site says requests go through OpenRouter using a key you supply. That makes Free Model less about getting rid of accounts and more about giving one account a shared place to explore models and connect them to an application.

One key, two ways to use models

The basic flow is to connect an OpenRouter key, choose a model, and then either send messages in the web chat or call the service from code. The API is described as OpenAI-compatible, so a developer can point an OpenAI SDK at Free Model rather than build a separate client for each listed model. The page shows a model ID for direct selection and an auto option for routing.

That common interface is the practical answer to the product’s central problem. You can try a model in the browser, then use the same service from a script without changing the broad shape of the integration. If a selected model is rate-limited, the site says auto will try another available free model. This is fallback within the models connected through the service, not a promise that every request will always find an available route.

The Free Model site presents a changing selection of models and lets users choose one for each message or hand selection to Auto. The service itself is free, according to the developer. The models are routed through OpenRouter, whose account limits still apply. In other words, “free” describes the inference options listed here, not an unlimited allowance independent of the provider.

The trade is convenience for another intermediary

Using the gateway means supplying a provider key to Free Model. Its page says the key is encrypted on its server and is not shown again. That is useful context, but it also means the key is not kept solely on your own machine. Anyone handling a key with access to provider usage should consider whether they are comfortable trusting an intermediary with it, and should use the provider’s ability to revoke the key if needed.

The page also distinguishes conversation content from operational records. It says chats stay in the open tab and disappear when the tab is closed, a new chat is started, or the user signs out. It says request records retain usage metadata such as model, token count, status, and timing, but not conversation text. Those are the product’s stated data practices; they are worth reading alongside the privacy terms before sending sensitive material.

There is a more immediate functional limit: chat and API use are text-only for now. Some models in the list may accept images upstream, but Free Model says its own interface does not pass images or files. So a model’s advertised capabilities do not necessarily translate into capabilities through this gateway. If your task involves screenshots, documents, audio, or other uploaded input, this is not the route to assume will work.

A useful test bench, not a model guarantee

For someone comparing text models, a browser chat is a low-effort way to try a prompt before putting a model into a prototype. The API then gives a developer a common integration point, while the existing OpenRouter key ties requests to the user’s own account and its limits. That can be a sensible arrangement for experiments, small scripts, and applications where swapping models is part of the work.

It does not remove the need to understand the model IDs, provider limits, or the consequences of routing through a third party. Nor does the shared API mean that different models behave alike. Model choice still matters, and automatic fallback can change which model answers a request when one is unavailable. Developers who need a fixed model response should select an exact model ID rather than rely on Auto.

Free Model is for developers and curious users who want to test no-cost text models in a browser and make calls through a familiar API without maintaining a separate connection for each one. It is a poor fit for people who need image or file inputs, want conversations saved, or will not place an OpenRouter key with a gateway service.
