Brainstorm Puts Your Knowledge on Your Own Machine

A note can start in one tool, become a task in another, and end up trapped in a third. The usual fix is to accept a central workspace that stores everything for you. That is convenient, but it also means trusting one service with your files, access rules, and often your AI requests.
Brainstorm takes the opposite approach. It is a desktop environment where the apps, the underlying files, and the AI layer are intended to stay on your machine. The product is aimed at people who want one knowledge system without handing ownership of that system to a cloud provider.
A desktop shell for separate apps
Brainstorm does not present itself as one large notes application. Its shell is a desktop with a wallpaper, app icons, and windows. The shell hosts apps, while the apps handle the actual work.
The available tools described by the developer include Notes, Database, Files, Tasks, Calendar, Contacts, Graph, Whiteboard, Bookmarks, Journal, and Code. You install the parts that suit your workflow rather than accepting one fixed feature set. The developer also says third-party apps can be installed from a catalogue or URL, although the broader app marketplace is still on the roadmap.
This structure gives Brainstorm a clear purpose. It is less about adding another place to write and more about putting different views over the same body of information. A note can be represented as a database row or a graph node because the apps are designed to work with one shared vault. The stated goal is to avoid copies and manual exports between tools.
That is useful if your work crosses formats regularly. It is less useful if you only need a simple writing surface and do not want to think about apps, objects, or a desktop-like environment.
Files stay in a vault you control
The core storage model is straightforward in principle. Brainstorm says each document is a plain file in a folder on your computer. That makes the vault part of your own file system rather than an account that exists only inside the product.
The app runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux. The developer describes sync as optional, with encrypted synchronisation between devices and no account required. It also says users can sync over their own network, use a self-hosted relay, or export their information to standard formats. Those are claims about the product's current design, not guarantees that every workflow will be equally simple.
The local-first approach changes the failure points. Your files are not dependent on a remote workspace being available for basic access. At the same time, you become responsible for the ordinary risks of local software: keeping devices backed up, managing access to the machine, and deciding how multiple copies should be maintained. Optional sync may reduce some of that work, but it does not remove the need to understand where your vault lives.
AI access is treated as a permission problem
Brainstorm's AI feature is not described as a chat box placed beside your notes. The shell is intended to broker AI calls and restrict what each app or agent can read. The developer says every grant is specific, logged, and reversible, with requests denied when the system cannot verify them.
You can provide your own provider key or use a model running locally, according to the product description. Per-app budgets are also described as a way to limit AI usage. This makes the central question less about whether AI is present and more about which files it can reach for a particular job.
That distinction matters for sensitive knowledge bases. A summarisation tool may need access to a project folder, but not personal records or unrelated client work. A permission layer can make that boundary visible. It cannot, by itself, prove that every model, app, or future extension will handle data exactly as you expect. Users still need to inspect permissions and understand the providers they choose.
The landing page also separates current features from future plans. The AI broker, provenance, and budgets are presented as available, while agents with their own identities and histories are listed as work in progress. A mobile companion is also planned, so Brainstorm is currently a desktop product rather than a complete cross-device knowledge system.
Who Brainstorm fits
Brainstorm is currently presented as a public beta, with an open-source codebase and a free plan with a paid upgrade. The free offering is centred on software that runs locally, while the paid direction is for hosted infrastructure. You can try the product without first building a subscription around your files, but beta software may still involve unfinished edges and changing behaviour.
It makes the most sense for developers, privacy-conscious researchers, and technical teams that want modular knowledge tools, local files, and tighter control over AI access. It is also a plausible fit for someone who has outgrown a single notes app but does not want a cloud database to become the system of record.
It is a poor fit for people who need polished mobile capture today, want a mature third-party app ecosystem, or would rather have one opinionated application handle setup and storage. Brainstorm's promise depends on accepting a more inspectable and configurable desktop model. That tradeoff is the product, not a detail around it.
